Overwatch competitive mode update

So competitive play is coming to Overwatch at the end of June-really soon! Competitive play is going to be for players that want to take the game more seriously. There was a competitive mode in beta but at the time people said that it wasn't competitive enough. Jeff Kaplan (director of Overwatch) made a video about how they are bringing us new changes with this new update coming up.

First, they're going to extend seasons. It's going to be more of a three month season based on real seasons in the Northern Hemisphere. We'll basically be able to play for two and a half months, then there will be a break, and then it will start again.

Next, the format for assault and escort modes will be changed. One thing that used to happen a lot is that the game would go into sudden death (overtime) way too much-about 35% of the time. When its a close match its cool but Blizzard wants to minimize how often that happens. The other thing is that when sudden death happens it will resolve on the map that you're playing on rather than a random control point map.

Then, there's assault mode. People thought that these maps were ending way too quickly. So they want to make the maps last longer.

The other thing about competitive play is progression versus skill. In the beta it felt like a grind but the players made it clear (on reddit) that they just wanted to know where their skill was compared to other players. After all, this is competitive mode. From now on their won't be tiers. Instead, it will be based on mmr (match making rating) and it will be directly correlated to something called skill rating, which will go between one and one hundred. When you come out of placement matches you will be able to see your skill rating and you'll see other players' skill ratings as well on your screen. You'll also see the team average skill rating and you'll be able to see how fair of a chance the match will be. Not every match will be perfectly fair but you will stand more to gain if you win. People really want to know their skill. But the downside of a system like this is that you're going to go down but this is the competetive system that they think players attracted to competetive play will want. If not, then Blizz is willing to change the system overtime to be right for Overwatch and the players.

Blizz wants this game to be as great as we do and they're right there alongside of us playing and feeling what we're feeling. They think this update is going to be great but if its not they will make adjustments and improve things from there.

Lastly, there will be some rewards. Mostly cosmetic:sprays, player icons, cool customized golden guns etc. The highest skilled players will have it right away and there will also be exclusive stuff that only the top players will have.

So yeah, that's competitive play as directly talked about by Jeff Kaplan in a new video. Sounds exciting!
