Competitive mode update-overwatch

Yesterday competitive mode came out in Overwatch. It's been a long time coming and its cool that Blizzard finally delivered this new addition to the game. Lets break it down! (Lucio reference).

For the most part Overwatch hasn't changed much, even in ranked. You'll need to be at least rank 25 to play competitive. All 12 maps are here and each map has its own competitive playstyle.

Escort and Hybrid maps — Dorado, Watchpoint: Gibraltar, Route 66, King’s Row, Numbani, Hollywood
On any map with payload both teams fight to deliver the payload-one attacking and one defending. Whoever does better across both games wins the whole match.

Assault maps — Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, Volskaya Industries
These maps work similarly with a team attacking and the other defending but it also introduces a time bank system where each time has ten minutes. If your team can capture both points and your opponents can't that's game right there. But if you can cap the same amount of objectives you'll play again. This time the attackers will only have as much time they had left over from their attacking round.

Control maps — Nepal, Ilios, Lijiang Tower
These are the only maps that never end in a tie. They work essentially the same as in Quick Play except its a best of five instead of a best of three. First to win three rounds wins it all.

Sudden Death
Ties will drop both teams into a system known as sudden death where attackers only have around 2 minutes to cap a point, thus winning it all. If they can't capture the point then the defense team wins. It's decided who's attacking and who's defending by a coin flip. Many people feel this isn't fair. Game Director Jeff Kaplan said in a lengthy post that they're going to stay with this coin flip mechanic for this first season but they will address the issue in later seasons.

How does ranking work? Before you get a ranking you have to do ten placement matches. Skill rank is different from other games where 1 represents the worst players, 100 the best, and the majority fitting somewhere around 50. After every match you'll gain or lose skill rank points based on if you win or lose. You'll gain more sp (skill points) if you beat a team that has a higher average skill rating than your team.

Rewards
Lastly, the good stuff-cosmetic items. For completing the ten placement matches you get a unique player icon and spray for that season. Making it to top 500 for your entire server will place a special icon under your hero portrait instead of just your rank-and if you finish the season in the top 500 you get an animated spray unique to that season.

But for those of us that aren't going to be the top 500 players of our servers each competitive match you win will give you one ranked point. Ranked points can be spent on special cosmetic items-which are currently golden versions of each hero's guns or weapons. Right now golden guns are 300 ranked points which means you'll have to win 300 competitive matches just to get one-that isn't cheap! This takes a lot of player time as well dedication to the game to earn those golden guns. Lastly, the hero gallery has been updated to have a brand new weapons tab to house them which means there's potential for more unique items in the future.
