The Summer of COVID

Concert Industry Faces Cruel, Cruel Summer as Coronavirus Spreads ... Hello, world.

It's been quite some time since the last post, which was a great one if you missed it. I wrote a post entitled How the Beatles Saved Me During Corona, it was a super fun post. If you missed it you can check it out here.

However, this post is about the Summer of COVID. This has been the most unprecedented summer of my life. Nothing went as planned, there was no great vacation, nor will there be. I'm continuing to work in a retail environment where I can easily get COVID. The threat is always there no matter what I do at work. If I get it, I get it, as they say.

The summer heat has been unrelenting. Even as I write this now at 10 pm on a Thursday night, the humidity outside would make you sweat like a pig. Tomorrow it's supposed to be 100 degrees.

I think the main thing for me this summer has been to just find a way to live during COVID, maybe even reinventing myself a bit. For example, I started playing less video games and playing much more music, increasing my creative abilities. I've been playing both guitar and keyboard every day.

In addition, I've been reading outside my usual literary genres. I started reading more history books, starting with the Greeks and Romans. I even got into a popular podcast called Mike Duncan's History of Rome.

Let me go on a tangent about some of the history books. Let me be very clear; I think everyone should know at least a little bit about Greek and Roman history. Start with the literary classics like the Iliad, the Odysee, and the Aeneid, and then read Plutarch's Lives. I think those are all essential readings for anyone in the modern era. Why? Because everything about the Western world was already created with the Greeks and Romans. Understand them and you get a much better understanding of how the western world was formed, shaped, changed, yet in some ways stays the same. This is one of the most important lessons I learned from books. I did not learn this from school. It doesn't matter what your idealogy is; Conservatives already know this stuff, and Liberals learn it from liberal arts college courses. No matter how smart you think you are, if you don't know much about the Greeks and Romans, then you're not that smart. You add this history to your repertoire with lots of philosophy and BAM! you're already smarter than most of the people you'll come across. Don't let it go to your head.

But it's not always about learning something new. I've also reverted back to some of my old school ways. I started listening to more classic rock music of the 1960s; the Beatles, the Kinks, Cream, Hendrix, Black Sabbath, the Rolling Stones, and more. What I found was that I was burning myself out on so much new music all the time and that I needed to listen to the classic music of my youth, rock music. I still love jazz and classical but now I save a little bit of time each day to kick out the jams. So while I recommend learning and doing new things to find a new way to live during the coronavirus, I also think going back to your inner self, really reflecting upon it, will reinvent and reinvigorate you as well. There's always a balance.

Then there's the social distancing thing. While I've still been able to see some friends during COVID, I've mostly been staying at home with family. For a while, I met a lot of new friends that really liked me. But alas, I'm definitely a painted bird, and although I can pretend to fit in anywhere I go, in reality, wherever I go I'm a big target. I actually believe that even in my own inner circle, this is the truth. They're nothing like me and we don't really have much in common but our friendship is strong and keeps us going. It's actually pretty damn cool. So I guess what I've learned is that you should always strive for strong friendships but its always easy to tell who's worth keeping around and who's worth ditching. You might find that the harsh reality is that these people need you around them more than you need them. What do you do in that case? It's all up to you.

I also wanted to talk about money. In this time of COVID, I feel like there's nothing really to buy because you can't really go out and buy stuff without putting yourself more at risk, being in a large store with a lot of people, and also, just because you can't go out and do anything, so there's really nothing to spend money on. I have no desire for things, therefore I don't buy anything. I buy musical equipment and I want more guitars but really there's no point. I think we're finally almost reaching the climax where money doesn't really mean as much as it used to. I find this to be a good thing. Mainly because I'm not rich. I believe the economy will get much worse before it gets better. The fact of the matter is that the average American doesn't have $500 in their bank account for an emergency expense. That's scary. If we as a nation can't figure out things like affordable housing, rent, and affordable food, and affordable education, then the country will get much poorer. The rising inequality will eventually reach a breaking point until the inevitable worker's revolution. Possibly even during a liberal administration?

In conclusion, it's just been one hellova summer. I don't think things will go back to normal anytime soon. Now is the best time to truly find another way to live. Whatever you do, do it well, and really love it because although we're all in this together, we're all forced into isolation. Some of you will sink and try to find comfort in other people all the time, but the real ones will create an interior life, away from the world, away from their friends, their families, and truly live. That's what I' talkin' about.

My decision to quit gaming

So I finally took a big boy leap and decided to quit gaming for good. It was a difficult decision. I tried to quit many times before (like cancelling and re-subbing to WoW a lot, and playing Overwatch every season) but I always ended up crawling back, turning on my computer in the morning, and booting up some games. Now I know I'm quitting for good.

You see, I realized that for me gaming is just a distraction. A distraction from reality, a fantasy where I can escape. The longer I gamed, the longer I was able to live out the fantasy and not worry about work, politics, my music dream, and intellectual curiosity. Coincidentally the day I realized this the World Health Organization announced that addictive video gaming is actually a mental disorder. That's just sad that American males have become so lame.

Then there's the things I've been ignoring. There's my weight, I'm still way too pudgy. I need to get out and exercise more and be away from the computer. There's my music dream. I want to be a famous guitar player one day and playing games isn't going to do that for me. There's my education and intellectual curiosity. I have to become a smarter man, worthy of my own aspirations and be able to talk to a room of intelligent people. I don't want to only talk to gamers my whole life, who would rather play games and talk gamer bro-lingo instead of reading a book.

Now you're probably thinking who's not to say that I can't be a gamer and do all of this stuff? I would simply answer that yes that is possible but not for me. I have to quit cold turkey and move on to a better chapter, verse, sonnet, if you will.

I do acknowledge that gaming is fun and that its been a fun ride but I'm moving onto greener pastures.

Now that the illuminated veil has been lifted I feel at peace. I went through the dark portal and finally left Azeroth.

Fire and Dice, A Refuge for Nerds in the Valley

I've been on vacation for a week. I'm just hanging out at home away from work, laying low for a while. It's an unpaid vacation so I'm going to be working for free for a week but its fine. I wanted to talk about my favorite hangout place with my friends-Fire and Dice!

Fire and Dice is a hobby shop that I've been going to for over a year now. You can find old blog posts where I wrote about my sm4sh tournaments there and how I did and stuff. It used to be located on Ventura and De Soto but it moved to a bigger space and is now located at on Vanowen and Winnetka. It didn't move far and I can always catch a ride there with friends if I provide a bit of gas money. The place is known for its board games, Magic the Gathering tournaments, and Smash 4 tournaments which occur every Thursday.

I used to be obsessed with attending every sm4sh weekly and getting better and better. As I started working more I never got Thursdays off so I haven't been able to attend for a super long time. However, I've been getting lots of Mondays off, which are Magic the Gathering tournament nights. Since I started playing Magic there I've met many new friends, one of which even made me a really good deck. I've become pretty good at the game and gained a much better understanding of the tactics than from when I used to play as a middle schooler.

I actually go there to play Magic often now. I wish I could go to more Sm4sh tournaments there but honestly I'm so rusty in Sm4sh that I'm sure some high school Sm4sh junkie that plays 24/7 would crush me. That wouldn't stop me from attending though. I'd still be down, and I might even go tomorrow. But that's the topic for another post. Here I wanted to talk about how great fad (Fire and Dice) is.

Fad is the most fun place I can go to with my more nerdy friends. I have another set of friends who wouldn't set foot at fad because they hate smelly nerds crowded in a small space (we experienced this when I took them to a big sm4sh tournament) and also they aren't into magic or board games. However, my more nerdy friends and I love going to fad because its like a refuge, a safe haven for people like us-nerds.

The fact that tournaments are cheap ($5 commander league magic the gathering, which I enter every Monday that I can attend if I'm off work, and $10 sm4sh singles entry) and that you can hang out there until 10 pm is just icing on the cake. If you don't want to play magic, or participate in their Dungeons and Dragon event (every Wednesday) you can relax and play one of their many board games that they have out in the open on display. I really want to play their Mario chess game sometime, that would be sick.

Fad has improved my social life a lot. I've met so many cool people and new friends just by hanging out there. I'm probably never going to meet a girl friend there or anything but I always have a good time every time I go. I've actually come to find video gaming to be a bore because I'm so used to going to fad and playing magic with friends. I find hanging out in a social environment much more fun and better than sitting in my room on my computer and playing games.

All in all fad is a hip and happening place when it comes to hobby shop fun and gaming in the valley. There's other hobby shops but fad is the best one I've been to. Game Ogre was another great place in the valley (used to be in Northridge) but I heard today that they moved to Agoura Hills. Guess fad really is the best place for nerds in the valley.

There's so much more stuff to do there that I haven't done too. I was thinking about eventually getting into the Dungeons and Dragons scene on Wednesdays. Maybe one day. I wanted to write about how cool fad is because I've been really enjoying hanging out there on my vacation. Its a great store and its run by a bunch of super cool Asian guys. If you enjoy sm4sh, magic the gathering, dungeons and dragons, and board games you should definitely check this place out!
