Live Jazz Muzak! 12/15/22! Saxophone and drums!

 Good evening,

Here is today's jam session recorded on 12/15/22, featuring Jason Tomas on alto saxophone and Orlando Figueroa on drums. Usually I play guitar but I decided to switch it up to add some spice to my life. Songs in order are cminor blues improv, blue monk by t.monk, autumn leaves by jerome kern, and Spanish blues improv. Tomas played a Selmer alto saxophone, I played a limited edition pearl snare, kibaga practice pad, and a meinl cymbal with sticks and brushes.

FTO Trio

Gute Abend,

I got my friend Feather, a death metal drummer to come over and play my snare and cymbal drum with brushes for a jam session. And Jason Tomas, a wonderful, amazing saxophone player played with us, with myself on seven-string guitar. This is the results.

If you like what you hear here, check out my youtube channel, where you can hear Jason and myself do a lot of straight ahead jazz as a saxophone guitar duet.

Thank for listening and keep on rocking in the free world.

[recordings listed in order performed, two improvisations and standards include autumn leaves and blue monk, recorded on android phone with soundcorset app, a free application]

Spring Break 2022!

Hello, good readers of the ofigueroamusicblog. It's been a pretty long time since I've updated, so here I am, ready to share more information on what it's like working at the job still under covid conditions and more.

First, the working conditions have improved since I've last posted. There was going to be a possible strike but the company ended up giving in to most but not all of the demands from the union. We've also since added more staff to the front end. And inspiringly, I got promoted to cashier position after many years of toiling in the vineyards.

However, this doesn't mean that the working conditions are optimal. We're still working under covid conditions, there are still a few covid cases every now and then, and most of the customers aren't wearing masks while they get extremely close to our bodies and faces. Covid has been extremely brutal for workers in the retail industry. In addition, now that the weather has become a lot hotter, the masks have become really hot again, but again, I can't take it off, unless I want to risk the wrath of possible covid exposures.

I've mostly been chilling by myself and occasionally with a few friends. It's funny because, two years later, still under covid, I find myself only really going out to dinners with family and friends. It's my favorite social occasion. I've since left a lot of my many much more casual friends/acquaintances, to focus more on doing my own thing, which involves a lot of reading, guitar, and studying languages, mostly Spanish.

I started the morning by reading Machiavelli's Mandrake, a comedy play about a young man who tricks an old scholar fool into letting him fuck his beautiful young wife. Talk about uncomfortable reading. In a way you could say c'est la vie but if it was your wife or your girlfriend what would you do? What if you never find out like our old scholar dude? It's certainly a funny story. Maybe the ends do justify the means, because in the end the wife wants to do it again with the young man, and even befriends him and gives him a room at her and her husband's estate. Talk about the ends justifying the means.

I also found time to read Seneca's Agamemnon tragedy and start reading The Dawn of Everything, A New History of Humanity, a deep thinker for ya, anthropology and sociology.

Lastly, I even found time to jam with my friend Jason who plays the alto saxophone. You can find our most recent live recording here.

Although work has been the norm throughout and around all this activity, I'll be able to rest easy knowing that I'll be getting the better contract raises, and although I'll get less hours as a result of getting paid more, in that process I'll actually get the same and/or more money for less hours of work. Not too shabby! I found 100 rupees!

Although I haven't gone anywhere in a few years and things have stayed relatively the same I feel like I'm on a grand spring break adventure for the moment.

If you're looking for a reading adventure look no further than the beginning of my covid plague journal where I write about the beginning of the pandemic and the working conditions at the gig. There are many posts in the plague journal now after these two covid years. Read all about it here.

Let there be peace and love in the universe as well as within your life.

Live Performance 12/9/21!

https://www.facebook.com/100004840297787/videos/575826930149393

Good evening ladies and gents,

Please take a listen and watch to our latest live performance recorded today, 12/9/2021, posted above. I did one thing that was noticeably different from our usual performances, a lot of times after playing with the pick I would lose the pick and just go pick and fingers for a more pianistic approach and softer sounds with the rhythms. This allowed Jason to stretch out more than usual, sounding almost like Eric Dolphy in a few of his solos.

Thanks for listening

Happy holidays

Live Music Performance 11/18/21!

 https://www.facebook.com/orlando.figueroa.3150/videos/884509442267455

Good evening, here's another live music from myself, Orlando Figueroa on guitar, and Jason Tomas on alto saxophone.

I used my birthday guitar from my mother for this particular performance. I've used it before for our sessions, but this second time the tone was dialed in just right. There was a better bass sound, and I was able to get a lot of tonal range on certain chords in good moments using the tone selector switch. The guitar itself is a $160 guitar, as cheap as it gets, its a Rogue Rocketeer, something out of like a Sears catalogue in the 80s, but man, this guitar is actually good. Check out the tone. I use a basic Marshall avt275 amp on a clean setting, no pedals.

For this particular performance I was focusing on my rhythm chords and really going all out on the solos in terms of off the cuff phrasing, [as I think I was trying to do lol]. Anyways, there was some great moments here, in between a lot of comping.

Gracias por escuchar

Autumn Leaves [in the key of A major]

So this is what you call sushi?

Autumn is upon us! This is one of my favorite times of years because it represents the changing of the seasons, the Four Seasons, like the famous Vivaldi piece. This is a good time of year. It always reminds me of childhood and growing up in the Midwest. Memorial Day and this tie dye shirt I always wore. It represents to me schooling, learning, coldness, newer and more crisp air around me. It's also my birthday at the end of the month.

At this point in the pandemic if you haven't become used to quarantine and haven't found a new way to live within this new paradigm, then you're very far behind. It's a time of healing, renewal, learning, growth, spiritually, mentally, physically, all of it, it's kind of a big deal! Get with the program if you haven't heard that the bird is the word.

I've become entranced in my own activity. Although I have friends and hang out with them, it is really only within myself that I feel the Muse at its strongest and best. The muse is simply what keeps you going in your life. What do you really enjoy? Do that thing a lot. And find other things like it. And so on until you find what you find fulfilling in life. It could take 10,000 hours, it could take forever, or it might never happen if you don't search for your own meaning.

I've been playing a lot of jazz guitar and have found some improvement in the jazz playing genre. A steep learning curve was simply just playing different chord voicings over the same chords as substitutions. Nothing fancy but it keeps the beat going and sounds super straight ahead. In a guitar/saxophone only duo it works really well and keeps us grounded within the saxophone solos.

I've been reading a lot as well. My goal for this year on Goodreads [https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/56122996-og-space] was to read 50 books, but a las, it's getting nearer and nearer the end of the year and right now I'm only at 34 books. We'll see what happens. I recently finished reading Ulysses by James Joyce and right now I'm reading Plato Dialogues selections, an old copy from an old man, a customer I met at work. He gave me his copy of this Plato book [as well as my copy of Ulysses, which I specifically asked him for], it's from 1927, the Modern Student's Library, Philosophy Series. I've been getting a lot out of the book and I've been spending time ruminating on the various ideas within the dialogues. Sitting beneath the warmth of the fire.

I've also been eating very well but also making sure to eat and live in a healthy way. Food has been one of the best things in the world to me [lol] and I've been very lucky to live in California where the cuisine is literally everything and anything I want, reasonably within affordable price ranges.

Another great place for food was Chicago, I used to love Chicago hot dogs, polish sausages, hot Italian beef sandwiches, and pizza Chicago style with real bulk sausage instead of diced sausage. It makes a big difference folks.

Last night I had a superb meal at our favorite Korean restaurant, I had the ginseng chicken in hot broth. You add salt to the broth for flavor or you can eat it as is, which is pretty bland, but very delicious. Not only that but a customer gave me a Persian dish the other day at work and I ate it for my lunch. It was small pastries with meat inside them, they reminded me of pate, which my great Aunt used to make when I was a youngster. The stories within food is incredible and it'll keep you inspired till the end of time.

Keep hitting those high notes!

Meditative Improvisational Mind

Good evening,

I've been practicing and playing music a lot more often lately. As I've started live streaming jazz standards and improv with my good friend Jason, I've been practicing, playing, and recording much more often. It's good to be inspired. For a few years way back in 2013 I stopped playing guitar. It's good to be back in the saddle again. Here I'd like to jot down more notes on what goes on in the mind of an improvising musician. Check my first post about it here.

But in today's post I'm going to keep things simple and talk about how to really tap into that meditative improvisational frame of mind.

So we all know what improvisation is. It's the ability to play something, something well, off the cuff, as if you never played it before. I practice improvising most often in the form of jazz guitar. How do you improvise? It's a tricky question as there are actually many different ways to improvise but the best way for me is to tap into a meditative state while you're playing. This means that all other thoughts in your mind are turned off and you go into the present moment. The only thing that you're attuned to is your very nature; your daesein [your worldhood of the world].

Essentially, this means everything pertaining to you: How are you feeling that day? How is your day going? Are you happy, sad, or have no emotional attachment to anything in particular at that current time while you're playing? Is your guitar tone how you want it? Is your band mate giving you the space you need to improvise well? Did you eat a good lunch or a lousy lunch? What's the temperature in the room that you're playing in? Did you wake up early or late? Are you tired? Energetic? What I'm getting at is that to you need to be truly attuned to yourself, your world, your daesein [beingness, beingness in the world].

So in order for me to attune myself to an improvisational frame of mind I have all these things in mind while I'm playing. Now here's where things get interesting. Your playing is influenced by all those things listed above but it doesn't have to be. The goal is to have everything in mind but turn it all off, not rely on your old favorite licks and tricks and chords and live in the spirit of the moment.

The spirit of the moment. This is an interesting concept. While truly improvising in the moment you will never really time to think about the future. You will mostly focus on the present moment in time which is exactly what you want in order to improvise well. Like a true jazz musician.

The means to getting there is deeply intense and spiritual. The hard way I've learned is through endless jamming on jazz standards, free form improvisation, deep meditation, and calming the mind [with camomile tea]. Eventually, you'll get there and you'll realize that you can truly improvise. You'll play things you've never played before and continue to do so the more you tap into the spirit of the moment and enter that meditative musical state. The hardest part of turning off and tuning in is that you have to let go of your thoughts and even yourself. It's an intense experience. You must let go of attachment and suffering. But it's also soothing.

It's a lifelong practice. The jazz giants have mostly left us so it's up to us, the younger generation to keep jazz music alive. Hopefully, a newer generation like mine can do the tradition justice. Also, keep in mind that these ideas apply to other disciplines as well, not just jazz guitar.

Jazz Music Live Stream

Hello all,

Here's a jam session from today, this afternoon. We just played improv, straight-ahead jazz style, as I know how to play it on the guitar. I've been getting more and more into jazz guitar, and Jason's alto saxophone playing has really pushed me. The key is blending in the guitar with the saxophone.

Thanks for watching and listening. Have a great day!

On AI, Existential Threat, and the Collapse

Good evening ladies and gents. Hope you all had a good Sunday. I wanted to write here a bit more about AI, existential threat, and the Colla...
