I'm really feeling it! (Guitar)
So today I finally got back to playing guitar after not playing for something like 2 months straight. There was sometimes when I felt like I wouldn't ever play again. It was good playing again. As Shulk says,"I'm really feeling!" and "I've got a good rhythm going!" I noticed a lot of things about my playing that I have to work on. Now its all about fundamentals rather than improvising and playing hot licks and stuff. Now I have trouble just getting through a jazz standard, with the lead melody but also with the comping in particular. Lets just say that I'm way better at video games than I am at the guitar currently. Some months ago it was the exact opposite. I have a long way to go to catch up to my old style of playing, which was an interesting style mixing shred rock guitar licks ala Malmsteen and Marty Friedman and playing straight-ahead jazz stuff. If I play everyday I know I can get back to my old guitar self soon! You can say that I'll be a guitar otaku. I'll still be playing games but I'll also play guitar too. Make use of my time in a more effective way ya know? I even got a classical guitar leg rest because I've always found playing with a leg rest to be the most effective way to play the guitar sitting down. Also, I always practice playing guitar sitting down so that will help a lot. Some of my goals in getting back into guitar is learning a bunch of standards and memorizing them by heart, learning a bit of classical guitar technique and songs, and being able to improvise through standards a lot better than I can now. In addition, I want to get back into playing metal stuff. My metal playing has always been old school, more like the 80's shred guitar guys like Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, and Malmsteen but now I want to focus more on rhythm stuff and being able to play more virtuoso type stuff like Tosin Abasi. Tosin plays a mean lead guitar style but his rhythm is really what makes him so amazing in my opinion. It's good to be back into music. Surprisingly, I've found out through Twitch that there are lots of musicians like me who love playing video games and playing music. There are channels like Super Guitar Bros where people play video game music on their live streams and it's just a blast. That gives me other ideas on songs to learn on the guitar. I've got a long way to go to become a great musician. I'm just going to walk the Earth and see what happens.
